Matching Tails is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, non-profit with a mission of educating children and adults in the communities in and near Sacramento and El Dorado County by conveying the significance of adopting an animal from a shelter or established animal rescue charity; one that specializes in rescuing and rehabilitating shelter dogs in particular.
We connect people with other dog-related non-profits and businesses, and provide resources for rescued dogs and their people.
Matching Tails aims to address the eleven key components of the No Kill Equation and in particular, the significance of communities offering the general public low cost spay/neuter for pets and adopting (not shopping) for animals.
We direct and guide people on where to go for low/no cost clinics, pet care, and humane and healthy training providers and products.
In 2014 Matching Tails began doing business as Shelter Hope Pet Shop Sacramento, which was located inside of the Nimbus Winery Village in Rancho Cordova, CA. It primarily served as an advocacy center to help bring attention to the hundreds of animals being euthanized in our local shelters (including our SPCAs and Humane Societies) and to spotlight shelter pets needing to be adopted from local shelters. It also sometimes served as an adoption center for both shelter and rescue organizations' animals, including:
The shop also offered animal related products for sale to help raise funds for numerous charities. Shelter Hope Pet Shop Sacramento was operational for close to three years thanks to a small but mighty team of unpaid staff and dedicated volunteers, and was able to generate funds and donations for the following organizations:
We orchestrated an active rescue endeavor from November, 2014 through August 2017 wherein approximately one hundred dogs (and some bunnies and kitties too) were rescued from shelters' "death rows" - mostly for perceived behavior issues.
To see those animals' photos and stories, please see (and be sure to "like") the now inactive Shelter Hope Pet Shop Sacramento Facebook page.
Please email with all inquiries.
Please Note: As of March, 2019, we are not planning to re-open an advocacy and adoption center unless a retail space is donated. Therefore we are no longer seeking any additional volunteers or fosters; we have not been able to advocate publicly or rescue any additional animals since August of 2017, yet we have continued to donate and support some of the above named charities.
